Advantages Of PEX Piping

Pex pipe has many redeeming qualities. First, it is capable of completing long runs without the need for multiple connections. This not only makes installation faster, it cuts costs by reducing installation time.  Pex ends the risk of fire and health problems associated with solder and eliminates the annoying banging from a plumbing condition known as water hammer since water flows freely through this type of pipe material. Fewer fittings also mean the ever-threatening plumbing risk of leaks is greatly reduced.

Pex plastic has less heat transfer as compared to copper pipe making it more energy efficient, and its flexibility allows it to run off of a manifold system which is an efficient installation method allowing all hot and cold plumbing pipes to originate from one easy-to-access point.

PEX pipes are color-coded for easy identification if the need for repair arises. Red is used for hot water lines, while blue represents the cold water line. It also comes in gray or white, which can transport both hot and cold water. PEX piping is a popular alternative to copper since it is more flexible, easier to install, and far less expensive, with a purchase price savings of 65%.

A final benefit is that PEX pipe can be added to already existing metal pipes as long as the correct fitting is used.

The Disadvantages Are Few

There are very few disadvantages to PEX use. This pipe material is not good for outdoor usage since ultraviolet rays will weaken the material and cause it to fail. The other downside to PEX is that it cannot be recycled like other plastics because it will not melt. With so few disadvantages, it is easy to see why PEX pipe received the nickname of “Homerun Plumbing Pipe”!

Types Of PEX Pipe

There are three categories of PEX pipe and their differences mainly are about how the pipe is manufactured. Here we will look deeper into the three types.

  • PEX A: This type of PEX pipe is made using the Peroxide, or Engel method. It is the most expensive of the three.
  • PEX B: This type is manufactured using a moisture-cure method that makes it slightly stiffer than the A Type and has the added advantage of being chlorine-resistant. It is the most common type in use and is ideal for homes where chlorination is high.
PEX C: This type is manufactured using the Electronic method, which makes this the most rigid type. It is best to use PEX C for short runs where going around corners is not required. It is also the proven choice for repairs.

Fittings For Every Connection

Although PEX can travel for long distances, there are fittings to be installed at fixtures or when PEX is being joined to other metal piping. The fitting size is determined by the pipe type, which is printed on the pipe itself. Here we will look at 5 of the most common fittings made with PEX pipe and see the simplicity of connecting this type of pipe.

  • Copper Crimping: Copper crimping requires copper rings and a crimping tool. The copper ring slides over the PEX tube and a fitting is inserted. The ring is then moved to the end of the tube over the fitting and is crimped to make a seral.
  • Expansion Connections: An expansion tool is used to open the PEX pipe diameter, and a fitting is inserted. The Expander is removed, allowing the PEX to return to its original diameter, making a watertight seal.
  • Stainless Steel Clamps: A fitting is inserted into the PEX tubing, and a steel ring is slipped over the outside. Using a ratchet clamping tool, a tab on the ring is squeezed to tighten it around the tube and fitting.
  • Compression Fitting: A threaded brass nut followed by a tapered plastic compression ring is placed over the PEX tube, and a fitting is inserted. This entire unit is then inserted into the end of a threaded fitting, and the threaded brass nut is tightened to the end of the fitting. As the nut tightens, it squeezes the plastic compression ring around the end of the brass fitting to complete the seal.
  • Push-Fit Connection: This fitting grabs onto the PEX pipe when it is inserted over the end in a similar way children’s fingers get locked into the popular children’s toy that tightens as you try and pull your finger out.
