Oceanside is a city on the South Coast of California, located in San Diego County. The city had a population of 167,086 at the 2010 census. The city is a popular tourist destination, owing to its historic landmarks, beaches, and architecture.
The city was founded in 1798 by Spanish settlers who were attracted by the area’s natural beauty. In 1846, after California became part of the United States following the Mexican–American War, Americans took over the rancho lands that had been worked by Native Americans for millennia. The area was divided into 20-acre parcels by 1849, but it wasn’t until 1912 that land was sold to offer homes to war veterans and their families.
In 1930, Oceanside had a population of 1,000 people; this grew rapidly during World War II when many U.S military personnel were stationed at Camp Pendleton. By 1970 Oceanside’s population reached 29,000; today there are more than 167,000 residents who enjoy life in this beautiful coastal community!
Oceanside is a city that knows how to have fun. The world’s largest women’s surf competition, the Supergirl Pro Jam Event, has been held yearly since 2007. The California Surf Museum is located in downtown Oceanside, and since 2006, it’s played host to the official start of the annual 3000-mile bicycle race, Race Across America—which is usually held during the second week of June. It’s considered the world’s toughest sporting event by many experts.
Oceanside has also hosted the Beach Soccer Championships since 2007. The festival is the largest on the west coast and takes place the third weekend in May. The event has a PRO side to it called The Beach Soccer USA Cup and it is considered to host the toughest competition of its kind in the United States!
And did we mention there’s a film festival? Yeah! In 2009, Oceanside founded its own film festival with an emphasis on showcasing local talent as well as bringing in filmmakers from around the world!
